This is one of four photographs I took and submitted for a university module -my chosen subject being sense of place.
I originally wanted to frame the piece of grafitti head on, with the sky filling the upper two thirds of the composition. As I spotted this piece of grafitti from afar, I had no idea of the vast scale of it. After climbingg numerous fences and making my way down to the traintracks, I discovered that the piece was much larger than I anticipated and had to re-assess the composition.
Though the grafitti artist's message was simple, it is enforced by the grandeur and scale of his work, this is why I chose to photograph it from an angle, giving it a sense of scale and perspective. I also thought that its meaning would transpire more effectively as part of bleak composition - this is why I chose to photograph it in black and white. I also kept the idea of having the sky take up 2/3 of the composition to emphasise its "power" in the composition in relation to the glory of the statement. I also brought out the detail in the clouds by tweaking the highlights in photoshop - making it somewhat heavier and more dramatic. I particularly like the dynamic angles of the jagged warehouse rooftop and the wall as they both meet - this lends the image a somewhat brutalist characteristic.

I also used the photoshop healing brush on a few spots of the image. This was to remove the banner from the roof, along with a couple of alarm fittings and a tiny bit of foliage which made it into the left hand side of the frame. I felt these blemishes distracted me whilst viewing the image therefore needed to be removed.
